San Jose Elementary School came into existence in the school year 1970-1971. It got its name from San Jose St. which lies perpendicular to Julian Felipe St. where SJES is located. It was pioneered by Mrs. Superla B. Marte who eventually became the first principal of the school. It started as a primary school with 2 sections per grade level. Although there was no specific school site yet for San Jose Elementary School, the primary classes were housed at the different annexes – The Bonifacio Annex situated at Upper Dapitan St., the Chapel Annex at San Nicolas St., and the Baluyot annex beside the San Jose Chapel. Realizing the predicament of the children going to school from one annex to another, the Guadalupe Estate has donated 960 square meter lot beside the San Jose Basketball Court exclusive for the construction of the school.
One-storey school building was built 1985. Later, Mayor Jejomar C. Binay decided to have it reconstructed into a 3-storey building with a basement that would serve as the Audio-Visual Room. The landscaping was made possible through the help of the City Government. Today the lush gardens in front of the building provide greenery and aesthetic attraction to the school.
Since its existence in 1970, SJES was managed and supervised by visionary leaders who talk and walk their visions. The following are the Principals’ who served the school in succession:
